K-9 teams respond to assist field and detective operations on a city-wide basis, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. K-9 teams also assist with emergency calls for service including "officer needs help", "assistance" or "back-up" calls.
Police Canine "Millow" has been serving the Morgan City Police Department since 2023. He is a Dutch Shepard partnered with Officer Clayton LaPoint. Millow was purchased from K-9 Concepts in Lafayette, LA. Millow is trained in Criminal Apprehension, Odor Detection, Tracking, and Area Searches. He is trained to detect Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Cocaine, and Heroin. A police detection canine is a valuable asset to law enforcement both as an investigative tool but can also be a deterrent.
Police Canine "Dally" has been serving with the Morgan City Police Department since 2019. She is partnered with Officer Zeke Sampey. Canine Dally was donated by K9 Officers out of Texas K9 Officers is a non-profit organization providing K9s, handler training, and equipment to local law enforcement agencies. "Dally" is a narcotics detection dog trained in the detection of cocaine, marijuana, methamphetamine and heroin. Officer Sampey and "Dally" received national certification with the "National Police Canine Association" which mandates and requires that teams meet the standards for service. A police detection canine is a valuable asset to law enforcement both as an investigative tool but can also be a deterrent. Morgan City Police Department hopes that "Dally" will provide service to the Morgan City Police Department in its effort, through utilization in the area schools and community for many years.
The Morgan City Police Department utilizes police canines, which have been specially trained in crime scene search, suspect apprehension, and detection of narcotics. Utilization of canines provides a higher level of police response, and helps to reduce crime in our city, and additionally reduces danger for our citizens and police employees.
