Drug Rip Yields Armed Robbery and Firearm Charges
🚨⚠️ Drug Rip Yields Armed Robbery & Firearm Charges ⚠️🚨
During the late evening hours of May 12, 2026, officers with the Morgan City Police Department were dispatched to the area of Catherine Street in reference to a large fight involving multiple subjects.During the course of the investigation, multiple individuals were detained at nearby residences and around a vehicle involved in the incident. Witnesses advised that the altercation escalated to the point where firearms were allegedly brandished, placing members of the public in fear for their safety.
Upon investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division arriving on scene, an investigation ensued into the events that occurred on Catherine Street. Investigators determined that Jonathan Rodriguez Peru, 22 years of age, of Federal Avenue in Morgan City, was in the area allegedly attempting to sell illegal THC products to other individuals. During the course of that illegal drug transaction, Jamari O'Neal Tillman, of Bush Street in Morgan City, allegedly robbed Mr. Peru of the illegal THC products.
Investigators further learned that following the confrontation, Anthony Joseph Benitez, 22 years of age, of Two Brothers Lane in Amelia, along with Rashon Anthony Jones, 22 years of age, of Bush Street in Morgan City, allegedly brandished firearms at Mr. Peru, placing him in fear for his life. Shortly thereafter, a large physical altercation ensued involving Mr. Peru, Mr. Benitez, and an additional 15-year-old juvenile.Upon conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Tillman, Mr. Benitez, Mr. Jones, Mr. Peru, and the juvenile male were arrested and transported to the Morgan City Police Department for booking.
Chief Chad M. Adams would like to recognize the hard work and coordinated efforts of both the Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations Division for their efforts in this investigation and for helping remove violent offenders from the streets. He would also like to remind the public that while some may view marijuana-related offenses as "minor," the violence and dangerous situations that routinely stem from illegal narcotics sales continue to pose a serious threat to the community. These illegal transactions frequently place not only the individuals involved in danger, but also innocent members of the public who may be nearby when these incidents escalate.
The Morgan City Police Department will continue applying pressure on individuals involved in the distribution and sale of illegal narcotics within our community.
Anyone with information regarding individuals involved in the sale of illegal narcotics in the Morgan City area is encouraged to contact the Narcotics Division of the Morgan City Police Department. Citizens can remain anonymous. Help us continue keeping the streets of Morgan City safe.
